Brass is the most popular of the ‘yellow metals’ and is almost entirely made up of Copper mixed with various amounts of Zinc. For this reason, Brass is often referred to as a Copper Alloy.
Brass has many attributes which see it used in thousands of applications, many of which we encounter in our everyday lives.
Brass has excellent corrosion resistance, which makes it great for outdoor applications such as door furniture, locks & keys and boat building. Brass is also commonly used for valves, taps, plumbing fittings & pipework.
It has excellent tensile strength, which is one of the reasons why Brass is so often used in the manufacture of fasteners & fixings.
Brass is an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity, and is often found in electrical components.
Of course brass can also be polished up to a brilliant shine, making it ideal for decorative items, and is a cheaper alternative to gold. This is why brass is widely used to make jewellery, watches, clocks.
Due to all of the above factors, brass is also very popular with model making.
All of the Brass rod & strip that we currently stock is supplied in grade CZ121 (CW614N) which is commonly known as the Free Machining grade. This ease of machinability is achieved by the addition of a small about of lead into the composition of the alloy.
